IRIS - IVDX
Integrated Voice and Data Exchange
In the high-end enterprise market, Convergence is the buzzword. The revolution in the field of technology has witnessed the birth of many new solutions. But
ineffectiveness to communicate beyond their domain have left many a technological innovations redundant. The challenge over the ages has been to find
a solution for integration, integration across and beyond technologies - to converge into one world. The future of communications at the global level thus lies in Convergence
of voice, data and video. Indian customer is vigilant enough to acknowledge the rapidly changing nature of technology & its advantages . As the telecom infrastructure
becomes efficient and strong , more & more customers are bound to go for switches that support features like VOIP, ADSL, IP & ETHERNET -all integrated
into one. |
 |
IRIS-IVDX is an integrated voice & data switch. The need for integrating the voice and data switch was there ever since the rapid expansion of Internet surpassed
every other technological development. Internet has played an instrumental role in initiating processes that brought out massive changes in the global telecom
network and hence we envisage that IP is a major protocol on which services would be developed. This would also help in eliminating two different sets of cabling
for voice & data networks in corporate enterprises. We have, therefore, designed a switch that could meet these universal demands in the New World of communication.
IRIS-IVDX has been designed to handle data as freely as it would handle the voice traffic. The basic switch is capable of handling data received and transmitted at various
different speeds & is also capable of bundling these packets for transmission over LAN and / or ATM as the case may be. This enhanced functionality would allow free migration
of our communication channels over the IP protocol keeping pace with the technological growth.
The system is designed on free-port architecture, and with distributed power supply and processor on every card. The back plane is based on UTOPIA, HDLC and compact PCI bus.
This powerful platform is expandable to support upto 43,000 ports
Superior Design
IRIS is a compact 32 port DSP (DUSLIC) based line card designed to support features like DTMF generation and detection, caller ID generation, polarity reversal, on hook
transmission, echo cancellation, message wait lamp and Fax/modem Detection. IRIS integrates unique features like automatic fault diagnostics, software based automatic gain control,
hot stand by & wireless telephony. These system designs are based on latest chipsets in the telecom technology which makes the system a universally acceptable switch that can
change the hardware parameters by software controls. The same equipment thus could be configured to suit requirements of various countries making this a global switch.
Data Server Applications
IRIS' uniqueness lies in its capability to handle data & video communication across different locations by providing connectivity of computers on WAN as well as LAN systems
across various offices of a multi location company. These would be possible over existing copper pair by use of SHDSL techniques. Switch would have the apability of connecting
various switches over a single copper wire with 2Mb bandwidth for upto 6 KMS. This capability will open up a huge market because multi location companies would like to work on
shared databases & would like a seamless integration of voice & data across their offices.
Some of the Unique Features of IRIS are: -
Hi speed internet access through DSL/ADSL
In today's dynamic and changing world, 56 Kbps is no more an ideal access speed by international standards. There is a need to support much higher speeds on the same
copper wire. This bottleneck in the download speeds led to the development of DSL technologies. DSL are digital subscriber lines, which basically involve supporting higher
bandwidths over existing copper wires & the technology involves simultaneous use of same copper wire for voice as well as data transmission.
IRIS has designed built in cards that will offer one of the following flavours of DSL- ADSL, S.shdsl, VDSL which are available today, catering to different segments of the market.
Thus IRIS supports the following data access technologies:
64 Kbps data access from analog extensions
Traditional Internet users make use of a dial up connection for getting connected to the Internet. Normal analog modems used for this purpose cannot support a bandwidth
of more than 56kbps but even this much speed is not achievable with most PBXs. Internet access speeds from ordinary pushbutton telephones behind high end digital PBXs
available in India today is limited to as little as 28 Kbps (theoretical 32 Kbps) while P&T network allows 56 Kbps (theoretical 64 Kbps) this is because of the type of Codecs
used in most digital PBXs. It may be recalled that PBX was designed as a Voice switch & bandwidth requirements for voice communication is only around 3.4 Kbps hence such
devices were perfectly suitable as voice switches. Indian customer has not felt the need for this upgrade because effective data download speeds here are still far lower than 28
Kbps hence data carrying capacity of the channel has not become a bottleneck. Now with higher bandwidth availability in the country the maximum data carrying capacity of the
channel will become major determining criteria.
IRIS uses a Codec named "Duslic" that would provide 64 Kbps data connectivity on the analog extensions hence you can access full capabilities of the P&T network
even behind the digital PBX.
ADSL – Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lines
IRIS has a plug-in ADSL card capable of downloading data upwards of 8 Mbps – IRIS cards are designed to support ADSL 2+ which can download data at 24 Mbps. Being an
asymmetrical technology the data upload speed is 1 Mbps currently. Popular application of this is, “ always-on internet” which is fast becoming widespread. In future ADSL 2+
would support gaming, interactive video, Television broadcast and other “on demand” services. IRIS ADSL plug-in solution supports a standard ADSL CPE modem at customer
end making it an easily adaptable and a user-friendly technology.
VDSL – Very high-speed digital subscriber Line
IRIS has a plug-in VDSL card capable of uploading and downloading data at 10 Mbps. IRIS uses a variant of VDSL called 10 base S which can transmit 10Mbps of Ethernet data over
standard telephone wires. This makes deployment of VDSL technology very easy. A typical application of this is bridging of two remotely separated LAN networks to make them work
like wide area networks (WAN), using standard telephone wires.
Ethernet Connectivity using "10 Base S" for LAN Integration
There is a great need to eliminate two sets of cabling for voice & data networks in corporate enterprises & where ever these exist as separate networks there is a need
to develop them on the same platform in future.
The IRIS is being designed with a built in "10 Base S" card that would provide 10Mbps of Ethernet over single pair ordinary copper wire. This card would be capable of
supporting simultaneous voice & Ethernet on existing wired infrastructure. These cards could be used to connect LAN networks to build Wide area networks or even to provide
computer nodes at places where CAT 5 cabling for office LAN are not provided. This will be of particular advantage to those enterprises who want to upgrade Internet access from
individual subscribers like in the case of Hotels. Presently the only choice with them is to set up a separate LAN network & provide Ethernet to every room, which is not only
expensive but also laying of separate CAT 5 cable is extremely tedious in an existing furnished hotel. In such a catch nine situations IRIS would provide an instant solution
without the need to set up separate network. Such solutions will also find acceptance in Corporates that have LANs by extending new nodes on this platform
TDM over IP Support
IRIS is designed as a switch that can be seamlessly integrated over IP or Ethernet protocol. TDM over IP card of IRIS is a plug-in card that will transparently connect multiple
IRIS’s at geographically distant locations over Ethernet or IP to provide transparent networks, whereby users at multi-location offices of a corporate would feel and behave as
if they are all operating under one single system. This unique feature along with DSL capabilities would enable users to set up virtual private networks (VPN) for voice and data
services.
VOIP
IRIS provides integrated solutions for circuit switching & data switching needs of corporate business houses using a single device. IRIS has an in built Voice over IP cards
for supporting long distance communication over Internet. These VOIP cards have powerful DSP's for doing voice compression, echo cancellation, comfort noise generation and
packetisation. Gateways and gatekeepers based on H.323 are inbuilt in these cards. The gatekeeper software does the routing of the voice packets to various destinations through
the Internet. Various applications like least cost routing, private networking etc. can be implemented using these VOIP cards. Using these VOIP cards, it has become possible to
reach any extension user in the PBX from any part of the world through the Internet
The switch will essentially have the ROUTER capability whereby it would allocate IP addresses to each analog & digital extension user to be able to integrate data switching
& dynamic bandwidth allocation to the user extensions. Such ROUTER capabilities providing independent Ids can have additional advantages like setting up a pool of extensions
for receiving Fax, voice mail or modem calls. ROUTER capabilities would further allow telephone & data calls to be routed by name as well. We target to provide very cost
effective solutions of data switching built into our voice switches, but without the fancy frills, of a pure data switch, that are essentially needed in an ISP kind of an
environment.
Such voice & data servers would also essentially shrink the telecom world much the same way as Internet has brought people together. Once the switch is connected to the IP
cloud then, you are connected & there is no significance of distance, much the same way as while downloading from Internet.
Vendor Interoperability
Switches are becoming increasingly complex & in this world of specialization there is a need where switches should be built on open standards where hardware of multiple
vendors could function under the software designed by certain other vendors. Solutions in the form of Soft-switches will be available from multiple vendors, at all levels who
supply open standards-based products & customers are free to choose best-in-class products to build their network. Solutions can come from multiple vendors, at all levels who
supply open standards-based products & customers would be free to choose best-in-class products to build their network. Open standards would enable innovation and reduce
costs. These platforms will enables and accelerate the creation of new "converged" services & increased network flexibility that would provide support for multiple
applications from a single platform. IRIS handles interoperatabilit issues in the following ways:
Q-Sig supported networking
The IRIS has been designed to support all the Networking protocols of the ISDN network. IRIS supports Q-Sig networking over predominant protocols like BRI, PRI & IP.
Softswitch capability in future
Soft-switch specifications are still being formalized hence the IRIS has been designed on a compact PCI supported IP backbone platform that would be easily adaptable to conform
to the open standards. We are designing all our new platforms on the IP backbone, which means that we would be able to integrate sub-modules of our PBX over the Ethernet or in a
distant future even across the IP cloud. This can further lead to remote PBX being spread across geographically distant offices and all of them would be connected over static IP
addresses to provide a communication system that would make these geographically distant offices feel as if they are all operating under the same switch. Such IP based PBXs can
have the control cards located at yet another place on the IP cloud.
Other Unique features
CLI with Call waiting on analog extensions:
In today's environment it is more important than ever before to receive caller identification on your telephone even before you pick up the phone. It is a valuable safeguard
against hoax calls & other security threats & for this very reason several airlines have made it mandatory to install telephone systems that support CID/CW facility
whereby the caller name is displayed on the telephone even before the call is received. While most PBX s display this CLI on the specialized digital extensions using proprietary
Key phones (price around Rs 8000), we provide it on the ordinary analog extensions using standard CLI phone available in the market (price Rs 800).
Further it is important that CLI is transferred to the extension user if the call is transferred from one to another. While some PBXs support CLI on key phones but will not
transfer it to the extension where call is transferred. We not only support CLI on all extensions, we also transfer it along with the call so that each time a call is received,
identification of the caller is received along with it & the receiving station can make a note of it even before the call is actually handled. It is possible to even take
print out of calls received along with details of CLI.
Besides these unique features, the IRIS also boasts of certain salient features, which makes it stand out from the rest of the soft switches and makes it a switch par
excellence.
